Hiking Near Sand Lake: Spy Rock & Rock Dunder
5 min read
The two best hikes near Sand Lake are Spy Rock at Foley Mountain Conservation Area, just above Westport, and Rock Dunder, a granite lookout over Whitefish Lake about 25 minutes from Sand Lake Marina. Spy Rock is the short, family-friendly one with a big view for little effort; Rock Dunder is the longer, steeper climb that rewards you with the most dramatic lookout in the Rideau Lakes.
- Spy Rock (Foley Mountain): short, easy, big view over Westport
- Rock Dunder: longer, steeper climb over Whitefish Lake — the dramatic one
- Both are a boat ride in, then a short drive from the marina
- Fall colour peaks late September into early October

Spy Rock or Rock Dunder — which hike should you do?
Both are worth your time, and they suit different days. Spy Rock at Foley Mountain Conservation Area sits just above Westport, a short drive from the marina. The walk out to the lookout is easy and family-friendly, and the payoff is a wide view over Westport and the Upper Rideau. It is the one to pick with kids, with anyone who would rather not earn the view the hard way, or on a morning when you only have an hour or two.
Rock Dunder is the bigger outing. It is one of the best-known hikes on the Rideau, a climb up to a granite lookout high over Whitefish Lake, about 25 minutes from Sand Lake Marina near Morton. The trail is longer and steeper than Spy Rock, with some real climbing, but the view from the top is the most dramatic in the area.
If you want one quick line on it: Spy Rock for the easy big view, Rock Dunder for the climb and the payoff. On a longer stay, do both — they look out over different stretches of the Rideau Lakes, so neither is a repeat of the other.
Spy Rock at Foley Mountain Conservation Area
Foley Mountain sits on the ridge above Westport, overlooking the village and the Upper Rideau. The Spy Rock lookout is the main draw — a high, open rock face with a wide view down over the water and the town. Getting out to it is a gentle walk rather than a hard hike, which is what makes it the easy pick for families and for anyone who wants the view without the effort.
There is more here than the lookout if you feel like staying. Foley Mountain has a network of trails through the woods to wander, so you can stretch a quick stop into a half-day if the weather is good. It is the closest of the two hikes to Westport, so it pairs naturally with lunch or a coffee in the village afterward — The Cove Inn on the waterfront, the brewery, or one of the village cafés.
From the cottage it is a boat ride back to Sand Lake Marina and then a short drive — Westport is about thirty minutes from the marina, and Foley Mountain is just above the village.
Rock Dunder: the big lookout over Whitefish Lake
Rock Dunder is the one people make a point of doing. The trail climbs to a bare granite summit that drops away over Whitefish Lake, and on a clear day the view stretches out across the water and the surrounding hills. It is a genuine hike — longer and steeper than Spy Rock, with some uphill that will get your heart going — so wear proper shoes, bring water, and give yourself time.
It is about 25 minutes from Sand Lake Marina, near Morton, which makes it an easy half-day from the cottage: boat in, drive over, do the climb, and you are back on the island by afternoon. Because it takes more effort than Spy Rock, it tends to be quieter at the top, and the view feels earned.
This is the hike for anyone who wants the marquee Rideau Lakes lookout and does not mind working for it. Skip it if you have small kids or anyone who would struggle with a steady climb — Spy Rock gives a comparable view for far less effort.
When the leaves turn: fall colour near Westport
Fall is when these two lookouts are at their best. The hardwoods across the Rideau Lakes turn gold, orange and red, and a high vantage point over the water is the way to take it in. Late September into early October is usually the sweet spot for colour in this part of eastern Ontario, though the exact timing shifts a little year to year with the weather.
Both lookouts are worth the climb in autumn for different reasons. Spy Rock gives you the whole Upper Rideau and Westport spread out below in colour, with little effort to get there. Rock Dunder puts you high over Whitefish Lake with the hills going off in every direction — the bigger, more dramatic fall view if you are up for the hike.
The cool air makes the walking easier than it is in midsummer heat, and the crowds have thinned out by then. Back at the cottage, the elevated deck looks south over the water through the trees, and the fire pit comes into its own once the sun drops — firewood, kindling and a lighter are provided, so an evening fire after a day of hiking takes no planning.
Getting there from the island, and what to bring
Remember that the cottage is boat-access only. Every hike starts with the short ride back to Sand Lake Marina — 3 to 5 minutes across the water — and then a drive from there, so build that into your timing and check the marina's hours before you go. The marina is closed Sundays, and the water taxi runs daytime hours, so plan your crossing around when you want to be out and back.
Spy Rock is the quicker, gentler walk; Rock Dunder is the longer climb. For either one, wear shoes with grip, bring water, and pack a layer in spring and fall when the mornings are cool. Check the conservation area and trail details before you head out, since hours, access and any seasonal closures can change.
